Travelers to the UK: Are You Prepared?
As of January 8, 2025, the UK government has implemented a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system aimed at strengthening border security. Here's everything you need to know about the UK ETA and how to apply.
What Is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a mandatory travel authorization for visitors from visa-exempt countries. Whether you're traveling for tourism, business, or simply transiting through the UK on a layover, a valid ETA is required to board your flight.

Who Needs to Apply?
The UK ETA is required for:
U.S. citizens
Canadian citizens
Travelers from other eligible visa-exempt countries
Exemptions: You do NOT need an ETA if you:
Hold a valid UK visa
Have settled or pre-settled status in the UK
Are a British or Irish citizen
Travel with a British Overseas Territories citizen passport
Live in Ireland and travel from Ireland, Guernsey, Jersey, or the Isle of Man
Cost and Validity
Application fee: £10 per person (including children)
Valid for: Two years or until your passport expires
Note: A new ETA is required if you get a new passport.
Apply Using the UK ETA App
The quickest way to apply is through the UK ETA app:
iPhone: iPhone 7 or newer, iOS 15+, 179MB storage
Android: Android 8.0+, NFC, 165MB storage
Download the app from the App Store or Google Play, or scan the QR code below.
📱 No compatible phone? You can use a friend’s or family member’s device, as the app doesn’t store personal data. Alternatively, apply online via the official website.
How to Complete Your Application
Follow these steps:
Take a Photo of Your Passport
Capture a clear image of your passport’s photo page using your phone’s camera.Scan Your Passport
Use the app to scan the chip symbol on your passport. If unavailable, you’ll be prompted to upload your passport photo.Complete a Face Scan and Photo
Follow the app’s instructions for a facial scan and photo. Ensure good lighting and a plain background.Provide Personal Information
Enter details like your address, job, criminal history, and any other nationalities. For applicants under 18, a parent or guardian’s contact details are required.Submit and Pay
Pay the £10 fee and submit your application. A confirmation email will follow.
Processing Time
Most decisions are made within three working days, though some may take longer. Once approved, your ETA is digitally linked to your passport, eliminating the need for additional documents.

Arriving in the UK
Having an ETA doesn’t guarantee entry. Upon arrival, you’ll need to:
See a Border Force officer, or
Use an ePassport gate (if eligible).
